Yesterday Morning I was scrolling through Medium in an attempt to find the perfect article to read that would be captivating and engaging.
First of all you need to know I am a very undecided human being, I am that kind of person that could spend 30 minutes searching for the perfect Netflix series to watch and then ending up rewatching the same series because I already know I’ll love it again.
After spending between 5 and 10 minutes scrolling the page, up and down I found myself with three new google chrome pages open each one starting with “Five reasons why, 5 tips, five lessons….”
Noticing a pattern? …….Numbers
Number work in headlines that’s a fact, how can I be sure? Well you are reading this because of the title or not?
Because we are talking about numbers let’s see five reasons why numbers get you falling in the trap:
1. The Brain is Lazy
As bad as it sounds we are lazy, our brains are lazy and don’t want to read a whole two pages to find out what five lessons did John learn from working at a top company.
Sometimes we do not even read all the words on the title and getting that number there immediately catches the reader's attention.
The brain searches for the easier path that achieves its goal early and faster and numbers seem to offer that path.
